Japan rocked by 6.2 magnitude quake

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck northern Japan early Monday morning, centered off the coast of Hokkaido.

The tremor follows a massive 7.7-magnitude quake last week that triggered a tsunami advisory and led to a rare 'megaquake' warning from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

While no immediate damage or casualties were reported, the government has inaugurated a special panel to review disaster response and defense policies.

Residents remain on high alert as seismologists warn that a larger seismic event could occur without further warning.
