Japan lifts arms export ban

Japan lifts arms export ban

In a historic break from its post-World War II pacifist stance, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's cabinet has cleared the way for the sale of advanced military hardware overseas.

The new guidelines will allow Japanese firms to export warships, tanks, and next-generation fighter jets to 17 countries.

The shift comes as Tokyo faces increasing security concerns from regional powers and seeks to revitalize its domestic arms industry.

While allies have welcomed the move, the decision has drawn sharp criticism from China and sparked unease among some segments of the Japanese public.
