Assisted dying bill set to fail

Assisted dying bill set to fail

A landmark attempt to legalize assisted dying for terminally ill adults in England and Wales is set to fail due to a lack of parliamentary time.

The bill, which had previously received support from MPs, was stymied in the upper chamber by a series of 'wrecking' amendments designed to prevent a final vote.

Campaigners, including the daughter of Dame Esther Rantzen, have vowed to force the issue back into the next parliamentary session using rarely used mechanisms.

The debate remains one of the most divisive in British politics, pitting the right to autonomy against concerns over the sanctity of life and potential coercion.
