White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the arch is intended to reflect the 'enduring triumph of the American spirit.' However, the project has faced backlash even from some of the experts who originally proposed a more modest monument.

Critics argue that the grand scale of the structure is inappropriate for the historic National Mall and follows a pattern of the president favoring oversized architectural projects.

The design will be formally submitted to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts this week for further review.
