UK net migration falls sharply
Net migration to the UK fell to 171,000 in 2025, its lowest level since 2021, as the government implemented tighter restrictions on work and study visas.
The sharp drop provides a boost for Prime Minister Keir Starmer as he faces pressure over immigration.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics show a 48% decrease from the previous year's total of 331,000.
Despite the overall decline, Indian nationals continue to receive the highest number of long-term visas among non-EU arrivals.
The data suggests that recent policy changes, including restrictions on dependents for international students, are having a significant impact on arrival numbers.
