Japan on alert after earthquake

The tremor, which occurred off the Sanriku coast at a depth of 10 kilometers, was felt as far away as Tokyo, where buildings were reported to have shaken.

Tsunami waves reached several ports, with the highest recorded at 80 centimeters, though no major damage or casualties were immediately reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has urged residents in coastal areas to remain on high alert for significant aftershocks.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has established an emergency task force to coordinate the national response.
