Mexico and Spain Mend Ties

The historic meeting in Barcelona marks the first visit by a Mexican president to Spain in eight years.

Relations had been strained since 2019, when Sheinbaum's predecessor demanded an apology from the Spanish monarchy for the treatment of indigenous peoples during the conquest.

With a symbolic handshake, both leaders agreed to move past the colonial row and focus on future economic and cultural cooperation.

The visit occurred alongside a summit of progressive leaders aimed at defending democratic values against a global rise in far-right extremism.
