Heathrow Third Runway Plans Published

The £33 billion project to build a 3,500-metre third runway at Britain’s busiest airport moved a step forward with the publication of draft planning documents that include ‘green bridges’ for wildlife.

Transport Secretary Dan Jarvis, newly appointed after John Healey’s resignation, insisted the expansion is essential for economic growth.

However, the timeline was branded ‘rushed’ by Mayor Sadiq Khan, who opposes the expansion on environmental grounds, while Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham also voiced opposition, adding to the pressure on Prime Minister Starmer.

The proposal is a central plank of Starmer’s pro-growth agenda but faces legal and political hurdles.
