Assisted dying bill set to fail

Assisted dying bill set to fail

Despite receiving support from MPs in the House of Commons, the assisted dying bill has been stymied by hundreds of amendments proposed by opponents in the Lords.

Campaigners, including Dame Esther Rantzen, have expressed deep disappointment that the opportunity to change the law for terminally ill people has been lost.

Opponents argue that the current safeguards are insufficient to protect vulnerable individuals from coercion.

The failure of the bill means the debate will likely be pushed to the next parliamentary session, leaving the legal status of assisted death unchanged in England and Wales.
