Burnham Set to Become UK Prime Minister

The Labour Party is preparing for a rapid handover of power after Keir Starmer’s resignation, with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham the clear frontrunner to succeed him.

Burnham held face-to-face talks with the outgoing prime minister, pledging a ‘smooth transition’ even as his team scrambled to assemble a government in record time.

He has chosen former Blair minister James Purnell as his chief of staff and is already facing pressure from both the left and right of the party over defence spending, benefits and relations with the EU. The transition marks a dramatic shift in British politics, with Burnham’s ‘Manchesterism’ philosophy promising to drive economic growth from the regions.
