Ghanaian nationals return home amid anti-immigration tensions in South Africa

Ghana has started a voluntary repatriation program for its citizens as a reaction to anti-immigration tensions in South Africa.

The first group of about 300 Ghanaians flew home on Wednesday.

Another group is expected to leave on Sunday.

More than 800 Ghanaians registered for evacuation after weeks of protests and rising fears among some foreign nationals.

The repatriation follows renewed demonstrations over illegal immigration in South Africa.

South African authorities have condemned violence against foreign nationals while acknowledging concerns over illegal immigration.
