Ghana has repatriated its first group of nationals from South Africa after anti-immigration protests swept several South African cities, leaving many foreign residents feeling unsafe.
Some immigrants report being chased from their homes, harassed and assaulted — even those holding valid documentation.
The South African government says it condemns violence against foreigners and foreign-owned businesses, insisting most citizens are welcoming.
Tensions over undocumented immigration, however, continue to displace vulnerable communities.
Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Durban, South Africa.
