Immigration ‘Not Really’ The Problem In Youth Jobs Crisis, Alan Milburn Warns

Irish Mirror Irish Mirror — 7min

Britain’s youth jobs crisis cannot be blamed on immigration, Alan Milburn has warned, as he rejected what he called “cruel myths” about young people being lazy or part of a “snowflake generation”.

The former Labour Cabinet minister launched an interim report into young people and work, saying there was “no evidence” linking migration levels to higher numbers of NEETs, young people not in employment, education or training.

Milburn argued the crisis is structural, with institutions, employers and government systems failing to provide enough opportunity for 16 to 24-year-olds.

He also warned that falling migration levels mean employers will need to do more to grow skills at home and offer opportunities to young Brits, especially as many sectors face labour shortages.
