OpenAI's head, Sam Altman, has apologized for not alerting law enforcement about the online behavior of a person who killed eight people in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
In a letter posted Friday, Altman expressed condolences to the community.
He acknowledged that OpenAI had banned the shooter's account in June but didn't refer it to police.
The shooter, identified as Jesse Van Rootselaar, killed her mother and stepbrother before attacking a school on Feb. 10.
Altman said he spoke with local officials and promised to work with governments to prevent similar tragedies.
